About ANEC
The Africa Nutritional Epidemiology Conference (ANEC) seeks to provide a forum for people in Africa and the rest of the world to meet every other year in an African country to share their work and practices. The outputs of the conferences will then be disseminated in the form of proceedings and scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals at reasonable cost to encourage emerging scientists and health workers in Africa to take a more pro-active role in prevention of nutrition-related diseases.
ANEC was mooted 6 years ago by a team of nutrition and health specialists of African and European descent working within the continent and in Europe, who felt that there was a gap in knowledge sharing, harmonisation, partnerships and training and encouragement of young people working in the field of nutrition and public health in Africa. ANEC was formed to help fill the gap and provide a professionally run and excellent platform for African nutritional and health scientists, similar to any scientific forum elsewhere, but with an added emphasis on training, collaboration and influencing public health policy. ANEC also provides an opportunity for networking to share in outputs and create collaborative partnerships to promote nutrition & public health education and research as part of the drive to support the developmental agenda in Africa.
ANEC I was held in South Africa in 2002 followed by ANEC II in Accra, Ghana in 2006 with great success. We expect the Cairo meeting to be even better and have been working very closely with the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) who are co-sponsors of ANEC conferences. We are also working very closely with the Nutrition Society in the UK. The Africa Graduates in Nutrition Network (AGSNet) have expressed a keen interest to work with ANEC and we are providing them with a platform to promote their activities. We are also working closely with the Unilever's global and regional R&D team and the Africa Nutrition Leadership Programme (ANLP) of which the majority of ANEC Council Members are former participants.
We are particularly keen that through our links with other scientists, the work that ANEC is doing will become more widely known within NEPAD and that we can work with other up and coming scientists as a forum to provide both support for their efforts and expertise with a passion for the Africa nutrition agenda.
